It started with a pattern nobody was naming.
For six years inside Newfoundland's Surgical Weight Management Program, Marie learned the lesson that shaped everything after: what looked like a weight problem was rarely just a weight problem. Underneath were hormones, sleep, stress, mental health, the relationship with food, and life itself.
Then she started noticing the women nobody was talking about. Women in their 40s and 50s. Successful, capable, decades spent caring for everyone else, suddenly strangers in their own bodies. They had seen multiple providers. Their bloodwork kept coming back normal. They were told it was stress.
Many of them had never even heard the word perimenopause.
These women weren't asking for prescriptions. They were asking to be understood. That's what sent Marie after the MSCP designation, and what Terra was built to deliver: one provider who reads the whole story, with a plan you can measure.
Healthcare should feel personal.
After fifteen years in nursing, Marie Powell kept seeing versions of the same visit. A woman in her forties, sometimes her fifties. Her sleep was gone. Her weight would not move, no matter what she tried. Brain fog had her quietly worried. Her mood no longer felt like her own.
She had usually told the story before: to a healthcare provider who ran out of time, to a friend who did not quite understand or to herself at two in the morning. Too often, she left with one symptom addressed while everything else was accepted as a normal part of getting older.
The problem was not that people did not care. The healthcare system was organized around individual symptoms, with no clear place in Newfoundland and Labrador for women to receive care that connected the whole picture.
So Marie built it.
Marie started in obesity medicine. Six years inside Newfoundland's Surgical Weight Management Program, certified through Obesity Canada and SCOPE, working with patients whose weight had been treated as a willpower problem for most of their lives.
That work kept surfacing the same missing piece. The women in front of her were not failing at anything. They were moving through perimenopause and menopause, and nobody had told them what that does to sleep, muscle, appetite and where the body stores fat. So she went and got the training. Marie is a Menopause Society Certified Practitioner (MSCP), the Menopause Society’s credential for clinicians with demonstrated expertise in menopause care.
That experience is why Terra treats hormones and metabolism as one conversation instead of two referrals. Terra Aesthetics + Wellness is Newfoundland and Labrador's first integrated midlife metabolic clinic: one lead clinician, one connected plan and measurable outcomes across four pillars:
- Hormonal stability
- Metabolic strength
- Nervous-system balance
- Structural resilience through muscle and bone health
Marie also lectures to nurse practitioner students at Memorial University and Athabasca University, helping train the next generation of advanced-practice nurses. Her work is driven by a belief that every woman deserves evidence-informed care, and a healthcare provider who has the time and training to listen.
She founded Far From Fine on one simple idea: "When one woman speaks, another one does."
Marie lives in Paradise with her family. When she needs to reset, you will usually find her at the gym, on a basketball court or reading a book.
I left the system so I could give the care
I couldn’t give in 10 minutes.
I spent 15 years in the public health care system. I watched women come in with five things going on and get 10 minutes to talk about one. Hot flashes in one visit, sleep in another, weight never. Nobody connected the dots.
At Terra, that is the whole job. Your hormones, sleep, mood and metabolism affect each other, so we look at them together. You get a proper assessment, a written plan, and follow-up with someone who knows your history.
It is care built for the next 20 years of your health, not the next 20 days.

This is real.
You are not making it up.
"I don't feel like myself anymore."
"Nothing works like it used to."
"My anxiety came out of nowhere."
"I feel like I'm losing my mind."
If any of those sound like your own voice, you're in the right place.
"I've been seeing Marie for perimenopause for almost five months now, and I can honestly say it has been such a positive experience."
